Winter is coming

I think I promised to show some autumnal colours. Up here in the Arctic the summer was super-long, autumn was great and colourful but if you blinked you missed it.

This is on top of Fell Kaunispää, a resort in Saariselkä. It is about 200 km further north from where I live and it is what is called ‘proper’ Lapland. The birches on top of the fell are called dwarf birches; they are shrub-like and never grow very tall at all. Russia, by the way, is directly ahead, behind all that vast wilderness.

The ground gets the autumnal colours, too, and not just the trees.

This is the same top of the fell two weeks later. Most of the trees were without any leaves now. This is how quickly things change. The ground was still nice and colourful though.

Further south where I live the colours remained for a little bit longer.

Well, this was a couple of weeks ago. Things have changed since. It’s more and more monochromatic now. Winter is coming…

Autumn looks lovely but winter is awesome. I can visualise a fab texture piece from the last autumn photo :o)

Thanks Marion. At the moment we are stuck inside a massive cloud which is not shifting. It’s grey, grey, grey and then some!! And yes, bark makes excellent texture.

Beautiful pictures. I’ve been on top of Kaunispää, but it was early February time and it looked very different form your visit!
